“A wise man may look ridiculous in the company of fools.” Thomas Fuller
Easter Sunday falls on April Fools Day this year. I bet a lot of people are having a good laugh over that. What or who is a fool? The first definition in the dictionary is "One who is deficient in judgment, sense or understanding. I think that we have all been fools from time to time. Being a fool is part of life. We mess up sometimes. We may not think things through.
What does the bible have to say about fools?
Probably one of the most famous passages...
Matthew 7:26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
Proverbs 26:11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his foolishness.
Ecclesiastes 10:1-3 As dead flies cause even a bottle of perfume to stink, so a little foolishness spoils great wisdom and honor. A wise person chooses the right road; a fool takes the wrong one. You can identify fools just by the way they walk down the street!
Psalm 14:1 For the choir director: A psalm of David. Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.”
Proverbs 28:26 Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.
Matthew 23:16-19 “Blind guides! What sorrow awaits you! For you say that it means nothing to swear ‘by God’s Temple,’ but that it is binding to swear ‘by the gold in the Temple. Blind fools! Which is more important–the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred? And you say that to swear ‘by the altar’ is not binding, but to swear ‘by the gifts on the altar’ is binding. How blind! For which is more important–the gift on the altar or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
Proverbs 18:2 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.
Titus 3:3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.
Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (The word fool is not here, but a fool would conform to the world...as many of us do.)
I don't want to be a fool.
